Changes in the pre-meeting excursion

We are sorry to announce that the planned tour up on and into the mountain Sornfelli is canceled. In response, we have transitioned the program to a site of significant historical and environmental importance. Please find the details of the replacement excursion below.

Due to the geopolitical situation, the military authorities have renewed interest in the facilites on Sornfelli. This has resulted in immediate renovation and conversion of the site. Consequently, the station is no longer accessible for civilian or scientific transit.

We regret to announce that the planned tour to the Sornfelli summit and its interior has been cancelled. In its place, we have curated a comprehensive excursion to the Faroe Islands' most significant historical and geological site: Kirkjubøur.

Tour to Kirkjubøur: From Medieval Foundations to Modern Blue Economy Research

This field tour offers a look at the cultural evolution and environmental history of the Faroese archipelago, including, though depending on the weather,  panoramic vistas of the southern islands, including Koltur and Hestur.

Site Highlights in Kirkjubøur:

  • Saint Magnus Cathedral: An 14th-century masonry and example of Gothic architecture in a North Atlantic.

  • The Roykstovan Farmhouse: One of the world's oldest continuously inhabited wooden structures, offering insight into medieval timber construction.

  • 13th-Century Parish Church: The only medieval church in the Faroe Islands still in active use.

  • The 1602 Candlemas Storm (Kyndilsmessu): A briefing on the catastrophic storm surge that permanently altered the local coastline and historical landscape.

The tour provides a unique opportunity to discuss the intersection of human settlement and dramatic coastal geomorphology. Also, the transit will provide a vantage point to observe the Faroe Islands' sophisticated marine industry, focusing on two pillars of modern blue economy research:

  • Tidal Energy Potential: The straits serve as a natural laboratory for hydrokinetic energy extraction. .

  • Advanced Aquaculture Systems: The straits are home to world-leading mariculture operations. We will touch on the archipelago’s success in high-efficiency fish farming, in particular the use of high-energy natural currents to ensure optimal water oxygenation and fish welfare.
